Celebrity-named boy from Delhi has in no time become the celebrity we would do the Hahakaar with – Gaurav Kapoor. He is not a joke writer, he is a storyteller, and if his friends are to be believed, the stories he narrates on stage sound funnier than they know.

Gaurav Kapoor weaves stories out of things that he sees and experiences and has a funny take on almost all of them – his school, college, office, Royal Enfield, Mumbai flats, Nano – everything under the sun that catches his eyes.

Kapoor credits Zakir Khan for the sudden interest in Hindi stand-up, and admits that he is a fan of Vipul Goyal’s comedy. However he just wants to be like himself, and we are glad!

Here are some quick facts about Gaurav Kapoor:

  • Has a journalism degree from Delhi University
  • Post Graduate in Fashion Management from National Institute of Fashion Technology
  • Worked in the retail sector post qualification
  • Won every open mic competition on the Mumbai circuit including Big Mic, Canvas Laugh Club, Chalta Hai and Buzz Off in his early years as a comic
  • Opened for Russel Brand on his India Tour
  • Recently changed his name from Kapur to Kapoor – neurologically at play here 😉
  • Does Saturday ki Rasoi with wife Shreya Sharma

It cannot be denied that the cost of recording stand-up comedy videos is too high. Ultimately, most of the wonderful acts that are presented across India don’t reach the wider audience. Moreover, there’s a lot of audience that is just consuming the free videos on YouTube, and this gap leads to appreciators of comedy miss out on the up and coming gems of stand-up scene. So, Humour Sapiens brings to you the comics that grabbed our attention in the past year.

Here you go. Check out the up and coming Indian stand-up comics:

Samay Raina:

Winner of Comicstaan 2, Samay is known for sudden quirks and punchlines which he delivers with unwavering confidence. He takes his comedy very seriously and plans on creating an impact with his fresh take on things.

Sriraam Padmanabhan:

The first ever joke that got him a laugh was, “I am Sriraam. I am a South Indian. I’d tell you my last name but we don’t have all night.” This curly-haired comic uses humour as a coping mechanism to deal with harsh realities of life. Sriraam Padmanabhan started doing stand-up comedy for fun, took a break for a while and got back with a bang. And we are glad!

Pavitra Shetty:

Always full of energy and extremely friendly, Pavitra aka Pavi is brimming with enthusiasm. She decided to give stand-up comedy a chance when her friends tagged her in a random open mic event post. And we are glad she chanced upon it.

Sumaira Shaikh:

A dream that never saw the light of the day; Sumaira Shaikh wanted to study psychology but thanks to her frequent visits to CLC (Canvas Laugh Club) that she zeroed upon comedy gigs. Shaikh has worked behind the scenes with AIB, as a writer on Abish Mathew’s Son of Abish and Sumukhi Suresh’s Behti Naak and web series Pushpavalli. She now be seen regularly performing in Mumbai comedy events.

Sumit Sourav:

Discovered on the television comedy hunt – The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, Sumit Sourav started doing live stand-up comedy in Bangalore before moving to make a mark in the Mumbai comedy scene. He also showcased his skills in the second season of Comicstaan 2.

Azeem Banatwalla recently came up with his newest video ‘Man vs Fridge’ and it is nothing but Truth. He explains why every fridge in the world is always full, even Ambani’s.

He starts off with sharing his latest learnings which can prove to be really helpful in your day to day life, such as DAFUQ, IDGAF, etc are internet abbreviations and apparently not some Muslim names. Insightful, isn’t it?

Azeem then moves ahead and shares the rules that people living in Bandra have to follow, and the pressure it brings with it. Jogging regularly and shopping at Nature’s Basket are the essentials if you don’t want t get thrown out of Bandra. The reason why he follows those strict rules is because Bandra is a cool place and it has lots of bakeries Patisseries. It’s like a bakery version of Shashi Tharoor. He highlights how these patisseries have unnecessarily creative yet threatening names, sinful chocolate, devil’s moose, and the likes.

It’s like chocolate is the new tobacco. Soon you’ll see Rahul Dravid in chocolate ads urging people to quit, otherwise you know what happened to Mukesh – Death by chocolate.

Azeem also shares his plight of managing a fridge and how he plays tetris every night trying to fit things in the fridge. But the crux of the matter is, no matter how big a fridge you have, you will always lack space to store things.

While this is a fact, there’s another fact that he makes us aware of…our incapability and unwillingness to throw away the stuff we get from Dominoes, be it oregano,  chili flakes or tissue paper. All kept safely in the second shelf of the fridge, beside expired sauces. How fridging awesome!

You cannot just miss this video. Every second of it will leave you grinning and wondering how does this man do it. Smooth deliveries bowled us over and left us wanting for more!

For stand-up comics, the day when their specials are to be filmed is worth it. Having explored, tried, worked, re-worked, bombed and applauded for a material, it is the day when they bestow their trust upon it and get set to tape it, only to release the laugh riot their fans have been waiting for. But if you want to watch the upcoming comedy specials before anyone else does, you can be a part of taping.

Here we share the list of comedy specials getting shot in the next 2 months. Be a part of something special, something that has been groomed and tightened to perfection.
