]]>Suhel starts off by announcing his career finding criteria:
First, don’t die.
Second, don’t get arrested.
Fair Enough!
He further talks about becoming a superhero, and how a career in the army closely resonates with superheroes. But…Criterion 1 comes into play.
Next comes up Engineering, and Criterion 1 comes into the picture even before concluding it.
He finally zeros down on becoming a doctor. Here’s why:
However, quickly changes his stance. Watch the video to know why!
He then chooses a career in stand-up comedy. Easy peasy.
Just stand on the stage and narrate jokes. At least he won’t get killed, or arrested…or so he thought. But, alas, again, galat career chun liya! Wanna know why? He shares the secret in the video.
The only option that he’s now left with is to be a Housewife. Know why he decided to opt out of this career option as well.

]]>The post Meet Karunesh Talwar: A young stand-up comedian making waves on the internet appeared first on Humour Sapiens.
]]>This young comedian and writer made his way into the comedy scene by winning several open-mic competitions, including the Comedy Store’s RAW. He participated in an open mic contest for Vir Das which opened the doors of comedy for him and he has been here for over five years now. He has also written sketches for AIB Roast. To add on, Karunesh has his own show ‘Paka Mat Na Mote’.
As far as his comedy style is concerned, he prefers standing at one place while he is interacting with the audience, as this makes it look less like a performance. He believes, the audience should feel that the host is talking to them.
When he made us realise that our parents are as weird as his.
When he made us realise that the very first alien of Bollywood came on earth to get high.
When he talks about Feminism, Indian Men and Sati.
When he talks about Health being wealth & the bravery of India contestant Nidhi Mahajan on Masterchef Australia.
When he assured the cab driver that he doesn’t have to get out of his comfort zone to drop him somewhere.

]]>The post In the serious businesses of medicine & stand-up comedy: Jagdish Chaturvedi appeared first on Humour Sapiens.
]]>Jagdish Chaturvedi’s life saving devices aren’t any laughing matter. He has conceptualized and co-invented 18 devices, out of which five medical devices were licensed in the ENT, pulmonology, medicine and hepatobiliary spaces. Wow! But that’s not it. These devices apparently have reduced the treatment costs by over 50% and drastically lowered the maintenance required.
For him, practicing medicine and practicing comedy go hand-in-hand. He also performs as an actor on the small stage. He has recently come up with the pilot episode of his web series ‘Starting Troubles’, the story of which is mostly inspired from true events, it has been exaggerated and dramatised for improving the story line.
Not that he believes in the notion that laughter is the best medicine, he does comedy because he sees humor as a secret weapon which can sharpen his creativity and improvisation skills. He got into stand-up comedy about four years ago when his tight schedule no longer allowed him to commit to month-long theatre rehearsals. Stand-up comedy allows him a flexible format, and offers space to write or practice whenever he has time.
When he aptly pinpoints the Bangalore traffic problem saying, “I was born in Bangalore, raised in traffic. My entire life has pretty much been a standstill.”
He as well brings out the doctor inside him on the stage while explaining the traffic issues. He says people diagnose others on the road, saying, “Abbey andha hai kya, dikhta nahi hai?” (Are you blind, can you not see?)
He often debates about ‘men-are-from-Mars, women-are-from-Venus’. Why? He feels most things women say in relationships are ‘confusing’. For example, they often end an argument with, ‘Do whatever you want,’ and it confuses him, he says, because that’s the whole reason for the argument, the things I wanted to do.
Chaturvedi explicitly states that a sign that shows any relationship is going downhill is when a woman asks, “How could you do this to me?”. He adds, there is no possible answer to this question.
In his Youtube series ‘The Magaa of Small Things’, he shows just that!
One day he waited for his wife to make a mistake, and showed the audacity to ask her the same question, “How could you do this to me?”, to which she replied, “How could you say this to me?”
Jagdish Chaturvedi believes that there are several benefits to doing stand-up, as talking to a room full of strangers, making them laugh, has made him more approachable and likable as a doctor.
He has also excelled the art of when and how to keep interactions with patients cheery.
The magical ingredient of comedy has taught him how to use a customised approach and figure out the most effective way to cure his patients.

]]>The post Master of intuitive sense of humour: Priyesh Sinha appeared first on Humour Sapiens.
]]>One of his first acts, was an act on the announcers who exist in small towns and villages during pujas. His enactment of the role was so natural and real, that while watching it, a constant smile will remain on your face till the end. His Bihari accent, also accentuates the performance.
The act that brought him recognition and a lot of accolades was the one on Bihar Toppers. He says Nalanda, which is in Bihar, was a centre for knowledge and people from all over the world used to come here to gain knowledge. But now, a Political Science topper says the subject is about cooking; this is the sad affair of the education system. His puns hit the right note with the audience.
“Bihar mein Shiksha par bahut zor de rahe hain…shiksha mantri khud syllabus pe baith gaye hain” he says. Now, if that doesn’t make you laugh your heart out, we don’t know what else does. There are many other lines in this act that we would like to talk about, but that would mean we will be giving the whole thing away. This video is filled with jokes and punchlines that there never is a dull moment.
After this act, Priyesh’s stand-ups have just improved. Be it the one where he talks about the thousands of matrimonial sites available these days or the one where he talks about life after marriage; one is hilarious than the other. His recent act on ‘Night clubs’ is a different take, which you would have never heard of before. He begins his set with the line “Nightclub, aajkal ke naujawaanon ke liye aisa dhaam hain, jahan pe jaake khud ko jal chadhate hain.” Well, that sums it all up, doesn’t it? But, this is just the beginning of the act, there is much more craziness that you will witness in this act.
It might be because of the fact that his approach to comedy is very realistic, based on his observations and experiences, or it might be because of his ‘bihari’ touch to all his acts; but his performance is something his audience look forward to and thoroughly enjoy, some even laugh hard enough to get tears of joy, he is one comedian to watch out for…we totally can swear by that!

]]>The post The Grand Finale of ‘Comicstaan’ appeared first on Humour Sapiens.
]]>The finale started with all the seven mentors doing a stand-up act for exactly two minutes each. Then, without much further ado, the stage (at the prestigious Royal Opera, Mumbai) was set for the final battle. We have nothing to comment on the final episode, as it was top notch comedy from all the five contestants; it was really difficult to say which one was actually the best. New terms were also discovered in this episode with them using words like Cheekalicious and Co-Ed Bath. The ‘fantastic’ five are also, co-incidentally, our top five picks from Comicstaan too. That is something, isn’t it!!!
Here’s what we loved about them.
The runner-up of Comicstaan and a Delhi munda, his beginning in the show was just about average. But, the way he picked up around the third act was just amazing. From then on, it was only growth for him. His finale act was obviously hilarious. He spoke about having a girlfriend and how taking a bath together in a 2×2 bathroom is not all that romantic as it seems. But, his funniest act has to be where he talks about how he does not have opinions anymore, after watching a couple of news channel and finds solace in cutting Bhindi instead…that was just amazing.
This guy from Coonoor was consistent right from the beginning, each act surpassing the other. The last episode before the finale though, did not go so well for him and hardly was funny. He made an effort in the Finale too, where he started off on a positive note, but then the jokes fell flat too. But, in spite of all these minor glitches, he still remains one of our favourites. The one act that stands out is the one where he draws parallels between our Indian dance forms and Hip-Hop…that was phenomenal.
If you need to see what girl-power is, you need to watch her acts. Her ‘lazy’ kind of striking a conversation is truly appealing and she is a cracker of a performer. She was one of the very few contestants who took topics which were out-of-the-box and made the most out of it. For instance, her act in the finale, which was about a letter that her older self has written to her younger self – difficult to perform, but she did it with utmost expertise. But, her best act, according to me, is the one before the finale, where she comes as death. Dark but absolutely hilarious.
This chubby boy from Kolkata has such a positive outlook and has an eternal smile on his face. All his acts were consistently good and he is one of those contestants who never actually had a bad day. Yes, he is the one who came up with the term Cheekalicious which I have mentioned before, and he has done it time and again. His best act has to be the one where he talks about the Taj Mahal and how UP Government has scrapped it from the state tourism booklet. Thought-provoking, yet slyly comical.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the winner of the first instalment of Comicstaan, the guy from Delhi, did not exactly have a dreamy start. His performance peaked only during the end and that really worked for him. His best act, for me, was the one in the finale. Talking about four things that he hates the most, he starts off with how annoying the Bollywood songs are, especially the army songs, since it is not the way it happens at the borders. Another thing he talks about in length is about dancing and how he hates when people bring you to the centre of the circle to dance and then disappear themselves. I do not want to say anything more or else it might ruin the moment for you when you watch it and you definitely should watch it…it was epic!

When Modi ji outsourced the task of giving bad news to Arun Jaitley; who ensures tumhara yahan katega, tumhara wahan katega, but ultimately sabka katega

]]>His interest in comedy, though, was not accidental; he used to play in a couple of college bands and write funny lyrics. So, while he was working in IT, he felt that he should also give participating in open mics a shot and so he did. But, he did not just win the hearts of the audience, but also a few competitions on the way – Punchline Bangalore and one at the Comedy Store, Mumbai.
This gave him the much needed boost and he started exploring on what else could he do with comedy. That’s when he came up with some shows on YouTube, which became an instant hit. The first one was where he would go out on the streets of Bengaluru and ask people questions on all kinds of topics – the VoxPop kind; the responses he got were hilarious. The one he did on politics was an absolute gem.
The next thing he came up with was a series called Pretentious Movie Reviews, which took a satirical look at Bollywood films. Kanan teamed up with Biswa Kalyan Rath, and reviewed films like Hum Saath Saath Hain and Prem Agan; no matter, how much we laud him for these rib-tickling and genuine reviews, it will not do justice to it. The ‘pretentious’ movie reviews were anything but that. What they said in the review made complete sense and we started looking at those movies in a different light.
Kanan next moved to doing sketch comedy. After the reviews and various stage shows that he did, he became so popular that he was offered to feature in an improvised sketch comedy show ‘The Living Room,’ on Comedy Central. Kanan Gill also co-hosted the YouTube FanFest India. He did not stop at just that though; he went on to star opposite Sonakshi Sinha in the 2017 movie ‘Noor.’
Out of all his roles though, we are a big fan of his comedy. His acts hit the right note with the audience, since it is about everyday life and it is stuff that happens with everybody. The only difference is the way how he sprinkles a little bit of humour into it!
Right now, he is the judge on Comicstaan on Amazon. He also has his special on Amazon called ‘Keep it Real’ and that is how this IT dude from Bengaluru likes it! Kanan Gill has sure come a long way and we cannot wait to see what he will come up with next.
Ok! Gill!

So, for the moments when a brilliant premise crosses their mind and there’s no chance of writing it down fast enough, the flip cam comes in handy. Buy it on Amazon India.
Notebooks are a wonderful way to a keep track of your material. Getting on stage and winging it, is not the best idea, help your comedian friends get those ideas down on paper. Gift them peppy notebooks from Happily Unmarried.

]]>The post ‘Comicstaan’ Review – A show that intends to prove that comedy is a legit career appeared first on Humour Sapiens.
]]>We really liked the format of the show where every judge mentors the participants in their genre – Biswa (anecdotal comedy), Tanmay (topical comedy), Sapan (observational comedy), Kaneez (improvisational comedy), Naveen (sketch comedy), Kanan (comedy of terror), and Kenny (alternative comedy). The contestants perform a set in each genre and are scored by the remaining six judges. The best part? There is no elimination till all of them have performed sets in every genre and their cumulative score over the seven episodes will determine, who will be going into the finale. Scoring is done by both the judges and the audience and the average score will be taken as the final score for that episode.
This kind of format gives a chance to the contestants to learn about the different genres there are in stand-up and that too from the experts!
The hosts Abhish Matthew and Sumukhi Suresh are doing a good job too. Their rapport on the stage and their jokes once in a while, keeps the audience hooked on to the show. The views of all the judges too are in tandem, which is a refreshing change from some of the reality shows, where it is more of drama than actual content.
The positives, though, end there.
The main mission of the show is to find the best stand-up comedian, who is worthy of being the next big thing. Except for a few of them who are worthy of being in the Top 10 and are genuinely funny, the performance of the others is so bad that you just feel like putting it on fast-forward mode; the jokes fall flat and it is sometimes difficult to comprehend what the joke was. Added to that, the judges’ comments are hardly two sentences long and it can’t really be called a constructive criticism.
Things seem to be looking up though.
The recent episode, where Kaneez mentored the contestants in improvisation, was worth the watch. All the contestants seem to have improved by leaps and bounds and that is a positive, going forward.
We can’t wait for the next episode, where Naveen will be mentoring them in the genre of Sketch Comedy. Fingers crossed!

]]>This guy is a class apart. His jokes are not only believable, but his whole demeanour is so likeable. Every time, he is up on the stage, the hooting and the laughing from the audience never stops. Be it his act on long distance relationships or the one on dressing sense of Indians – he tells it like it is. His best act so far has to be the one where he decodes the song ‘Lungi Dance’ from a South Indian’s perspective, more so from a Tamilian’s perspective and trust us when we say that you might actually fall of your chair laughing while watching this one.
“People from North India, my name is Karthik Kumar, with an H in the middle”. That’s right people. This lad from Chennai is breaking all myths people ever had of South India, through his numerous acts. If the stand-up comedy scene in South India is prominent now, it is because of him. He started Evam way back in 2003, with his friend Sunil Vishnu, which was mainly into theatre. They forayed into stand-up in 2010, when it was unheard of down South. Since then, there has been no looking back and people down South have no qualms of laughing at themselves anymore. His first stand-up Poke Me, is one of his best.
Yet another Kumar and this one is as hilarious as the other one. His style of comedy is rather different though, where his jokes come in the way of a casual conversation and that one sentence or word sticks with you. His act on Education and Raising kids does just that; where he asks the crowd “How many educated people here?” and then he goes on to say, “I was just checking if there were any Delhi people in the crowd!” …LOL! Watch his hilarious take on the subject here.
He is a Christian and a stand-up comedian; when he combines both into his acts, it is nothing but a laughter riot. Alex, as he is called, is easy to connect to as his acts brings characters to life, whom we would have also met and interacted with, at some point in our lives. A proof to this is the act on ‘Mamas, Minorities and Music’; his mimicry of a Mama (South Indian uncle) hits the right spot and you can see how the audience bursts out in laughter, including the other mamas present there!
“I was born in Bangalore and raised in traffic” – that’s how this doctor-cum- stand up introduces himself in every act. Every time he does so, he gets a roaring laughter from the audience. He has put laughter therapy to the best use possible. He uses a mix of Hindi, Kannada and English in most of his acts and that is why people from anywhere can relate to his performance. Here is one act where he talks about Bangalore traffic and road rage – simply amusing!
