More and more comics are coming up with political jokes, and the influence of political satire is growing. Does that mean Indians have grown a funny bone towards political comedy or comics have developed thicker skin and have become prone to abusive and threatening or negative comments?

The younger generation is sceptical about the news they receive from mainstream media, which is apparently straitjacketed, but prefer to be presented with all facts. And comics are doing exactly that, presenting condensed news without bias. The tongue-in-cheek way of narrating news sure makes you laugh but leaves you pondering too.

Some of the comics who are taking on the political comedy are:

Kunal Kamra

In a secret affair with Modi government, Kunal Kamra is habitual of taking on them with his political humour and accepts backlash in stride. A politician once told him, ‘’Go ahead, do comedy but leave politics for us.’’ To which Kamra says, “Sir, aap pe hi chhoda tha. Par aap log comedy kar rahe ho.”

Shridhar Venkatramana

Known for his ‘Prime Time Jokes’ – a series of Stand-Up Comedy videos based on the Prime Time news events that happened around us. He presents intellectually stimulating ideas which are hilarious at the same time.

Vipul Goyal

Apart from talking about Bollywood, relationships, advertisements, Vipul also enjoys talking politics in his acts. However, he ensures that he doesn’t offend anybody’s political sentiments.

Varun Grover

People these days are more aware now and are fed news at all times through all channels. This makes for a fertile ground for stand-up comics. His tour ‘Aisi Taisi Democracy’ is all about giving satirical twist to news, and audience fell in love with it.

Vir Das

Politics occupies Das in a big way! His gig, The Secret Set includes subjects related to politics, religion, racism and the Indian accent. He is often seen taking a dig at politics.

Aisi Taisi Democracy – The Aazaadi Tour of three extremely talented people – Varun Grover, Sanjay Rajoura, Rahul Ram, came to MLR Convention Auditorium, Whitefield, Bangalore on 14 April (Saturday) from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm, and two hours just flew away.

As we waited with bated breath, the awesome threesome came and the show began with Rahul Ram, amazing song writer and composer, singing a song on pollution, which definitely set the mood.

Aisi Taisi Democracy: Humour Sapiens

It was followed by Varun Grover, extremely talented writer and comic, talking about the current happenings and latest news. He sure gave the newsy act a quirky twist and left us giggling. We were treated to the Tinder profile of Modi Ji from 2014 and 2019. Striking differences in looks, we must say. Modi Ji of 2014 looked very much like him, however, Modi Ji of 2019 looked like Vivek Oberoi! Strange, isn’t it? 😜

Sanjay Rajoura, renowned stand-up comic, gave sarcastic twist to his narrative. He talked about how Indian men have been affecting the society and many other societal issues, and we couldn’t have agreed more.

While we were indulged in quirkiness of the comics, Rahul Ram kept us engrossed with his musicals on unemployment, pollution and the election month which is currently going on. He left us humming the tunes of his wacky songs.

The show ended on a high note with audience applauding and giving them the well-deserved standing ovation.

The trio blew our minds, leaving us wanting for more!

Varun Grover added, “Political Satire is very difficult in India because, iska seedha sambandh reality se hai.”

They are taking the Aazaadi tour to other parts of India too. Do drop in on their next ‘Aisi Taisi Democracy’ show and get face to face with reality.

He has a lazed up attitude about his demeanour, but when it comes to comedy, Kunal Kamra, seems to prove the line ‘Love Him or Hate Him, but you can’t ignore him’ is made for him, since that is what has been happening to him, from the time his first act came on YouTube last year. It was bold and it was humorous, at the same time. He received accolades as well as threats for it, but he just does not seem to bother about it. Most of his acts have at least one political joke and that is what his audience like the most about him.

A PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

Kunal dropped out of college and started interning at MTV when he was just 17-years-old. A year after that, he started working with Corcoise Films as a production assistant, for the next six years.

FIRST ENCOUNTER WIth COMEDY

He tried stand-up comedy for the first time in 2013. But then, Kunal started pursuing it seriously only last year with an act on ‘Patriotism & the Government’. This act was so powerful content-wise and jokes-wise, that it grabbed a lot of attention.

He made fun of people who always end up saying “Hamaare jawaan Siachen mein lad rahe hain,” whenever someone complains about the government. The line, since then, has gone viral. It is definitely a political issue that he took, but it has humorous punches in every line he speaks.  “I went and stood in the line, not for money, but for content” he says about the demonetization. He even speaks about the controversial JNU students issue and still manages to get laughs out of us.

Gau Rakshaks & Tripple Talaq

The comedian takes it up a notch higher with his latest act. Though the act was on how he takes revenge on old people for all that they have done to him, what stands out are the parts where he cracks jokes on all the Gau Rakshaks and the ‘hidden’ agenda behind the Government’s plan to scrap the Triple Talaq rule. Kunal Kamra is just a class apart.

The inexplicable goodness of Uber & Ola

Not all his acts are politically-motivated though. There was one act on Taxis and that was equally funny. He takes on Uber and Ola, apart from the local taxis. “We are not used to so much goodness” he says about the apps.

Shut Up Ya Kunal

Like a few other comedians, he also has a podcast on YouTube; his is called ‘Shut Up Ya Kunal’, where in a matter of about five odd episodes, he has had guests like Ravish Kumar (Journalist) and Kanhaiya Kumar and Umar Kahlid (JNU Students). It has its moments of fun and humour too!

With such strong but chilled-out acts, we just cannot stop wondering who or what will the subject of his next act. But, one thing that we are sure of is this Mumbai lad is definitely going to make us roll of our seat laughing with that too!

Movie Reviews, Sketches, Stand-up, a film – Kanan Gill has done it all and now, he has also turned a judge. This boy from Bengaluru has a super-cool attitude, just like the weather there! Like every other person from Bengaluru, he also started off by entering the IT industry and was a software engineer, before he realized that his true calling was the world of comedy.

Kanan – The COMEDIAN

His interest in comedy, though, was not accidental; he used to play in a couple of college bands and write funny lyrics. So, while he was working in IT, he felt that he should also give participating in open mics a shot and so he did. But, he did not just win the hearts of the audience, but also a few competitions on the way – Punchline Bangalore and one at the Comedy Store, Mumbai.

Kanan – The Youtuber

This gave him the much needed boost and he started exploring on what else could he do with comedy. That’s when he came up with some shows on YouTube, which became an instant hit. The first one was where he would go out on the streets of Bengaluru and ask people questions on all kinds of topics – the VoxPop kind; the responses he got were hilarious. The one he did on politics was an absolute gem.

The next thing he came up with was a series called Pretentious Movie Reviews, which took a satirical look at Bollywood films. Kanan teamed up with Biswa Kalyan Rath, and reviewed films like Hum Saath Saath Hain and Prem Agan; no matter, how much we laud him for these rib-tickling and genuine reviews, it will not do justice to it. The ‘pretentious’ movie reviews were anything but that. What they said in the review made complete sense and we started looking at those movies in a different light.

Kanan – The actor

Kanan next moved to doing sketch comedy. After the reviews and various stage shows that he did, he became so popular that he was offered to feature in an improvised sketch comedy show ‘The Living Room,’ on Comedy Central. Kanan Gill also co-hosted the YouTube FanFest India. He did not stop at just that though; he went on to star opposite Sonakshi Sinha in the 2017 movie ‘Noor.’

Noor - kanan gill sonakshi sinha

Out of all his roles though, we are a big fan of his comedy. His acts hit the right note with the audience, since it is about everyday life and it is stuff that happens with everybody. The only difference is the way how he sprinkles a little bit of humour into it!

Right now, he is the judge on Comicstaan on Amazon. He also has his special on Amazon called ‘Keep it Real’ and that is how this IT dude from Bengaluru likes it! Kanan Gill has sure come a long way and we cannot wait to see what he will come up with next.

Ok! Gill!
