What better than having 14 stand-up comics working together to entertain you and spread some laughter? Amazon added a cherry on top of the cake of festivities with Amazon Funnies – Prime Day Special. It featured a stellar line-up of 14 comedians – Sumit Sourav, Karthik Kumar, Aishwarya Mohanraj, Shreeja Chaturvedi, Nishant Tanwar, Neeti Palta, Sapan Verma, Sumukhi Suresh, Gaurav Kapoor, Urooj Ashfaq, Rahul Subramanian, Nishant Suri, Rahul Dua, and Anubhav Singh Bassi – who performed a 10-minute set every hour. They covered everything from movies to breakups, to gymming and wedding. If you haven’t watched it yet, you are missing the miniature doses of happiness.

Vir Das for India (Netflix)

After the release of two comedy specials on Netflix – Losing It and Abroad Understanding, Vir Das came up with another special ‘Vir Das for India’ early this year. The special talks about his life spent growing up in India, mentioning India’s favourite Parle G, Old Monk and chyawanprash. What’s amazing about this man is, he finds the funny side about everyday things that make us truly Indian. This special is truly special. Why? Because it is filled with some hearty laughs and nostalgia.

Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill (Netflix)

This show is all about Kanan Gill revisiting his 15-year-old self by the means of a letter that he wrote to himself – the older-Kanan, when he was 15. He goes through the letter which included a list of goals; he evaluates his achievement count and how far he has come in life. The tone Kanan maintains throughout is certainly a poignant one, but his subtle and witty comments rolled into one leaves everyone rolling with laughter.

Comicstaan (Amazon Prime Video)

Comicstaan, both Season 1 and 2 are the reality shows that feature aspiring comics – most of them are widely recognised now. So, Comicstaan showcases the talent of budding comedians who are groomed under the guidance of Kaneez Surka, Biswa Kalyan Rath, Kanan Gill, Kenny Sebastian, Abish Mathew, Sumukhi Suresh, Zakir Khan, Neeti Patla and Urooj Ashfaq. Starring Sumukhi Suresh, Pushapavalli is the story of a girl who is obsessed with a boy she has never dated. The show is laced with witty one-liners and relatable situations which will plaster a smile on your face. Sumukhi’s impeccable comic timing steals the show and she delivers a performance to remember. Amazon Prime video, in an attempt to take this year’s Prime Day event a notch higher, announced a special all-day bash for its Prime members – Amazon Funnies. This Prime Day special, a laughter fiesta will feature 14 stand-up comedians, each performing a set of ten-minutes in Hinglish, Hindi and English.

The line includes Sapan Verma, Urooj Ashfaq, Nishant Tanwar, Anubhav Bassi, Rahul Dua, Nishant Suri, Shreeja Chaturvedi, Rahul Subramanian, Sumukhi Suresh, Neeti Palta, Karthik Kumar, Sumit Saurav, Gaurav Kapoor and Aishwarya Mohanraj.

This incredible bunch is all set to make its viewers roll-on-the-floor laughing and forget the trauma that this pandemic induced upon us.

Celebrity-named boy from Delhi has in no time become the celebrity we would do the Hahakaar with – Gaurav Kapoor. He is not a joke writer, he is a storyteller, and if his friends are to be believed, the stories he narrates on stage sound funnier than they know.

Gaurav Kapoor weaves stories out of things that he sees and experiences and has a funny take on almost all of them – his school, college, office, Royal Enfield, Mumbai flats, Nano – everything under the sun that catches his eyes.

Kapoor credits Zakir Khan for the sudden interest in Hindi stand-up, and admits that he is a fan of Vipul Goyal’s comedy. However he just wants to be like himself, and we are glad!

The comedy industry in India is largely centred in Mumbai and Delhi NCR and in the past few years has seen lots of admirable comics take up the stage in North India and rock. Though, most Mumbai comedians perform in English or Hinglish, the comics from Delhi NCR with their Punjabi or regional dialects of Hindi have gathered a huge fan base.
Not only do these comics embrace their skill but also kill whenever they perform. Humour Sapiens share with you a few comics, 7 precisely, who we think are all set to be the masters of Hindi stand-up comedy.

Jeeveshu Ahluwalia

The true blue Punjabi, Jeeveshu talks about food in this video and wonderfully explains how all mothers love to cook our not-so-favourite sabzi in every few days. Moreover, the importance of maid in the life of a woman is inexplicable. He defines is wonderfully. Enjoy!

Gaurav Kapoor

Being one of the best comics on observational comedy, Gaurav Kapoor unravels all the secrets, such as Bullet being the illegitimate child of Harley and the reason behind elephant missing ant’s wedding. He doesn’t fail to mention how it is important for Bullet owners to visit Leh-Ladakh.

Vijay Yadav

Stemming out of Haryanvi origins, Vijay Yadav’s comedy is culturally inclined. His Haryanvi accented Hindi adds a distinct charm to this video and makes it funnier. He talks about Scorpio being an inseparable part of Haryanvis, and the beatings and bullying to win in sports. You have to watch it to know it.

Manik Mahna

Incredibly funny Manik Mahna doesn’t have many videos floating over the web, but the ones that are will leave you in splits. In his unique, dry style of comedy, he is every ounce relatable. From studious classmates demanding extra sheet in the exam to playing hide and seek for days at a stretch, this video will revive your school time memories.

Chirayu Mistry

Talking his heart out, Chirayu Mistry tells us how Baghban the movie left him confused. He is at his funniest best when he mentions Amitabh Bachchan. And we must say, his logic is absolutely correct. He is amongst the few ‘humour sapiens’ who can give a funny twist to logic.

Parvinder Singh

He who speaks in a swift Punjabi-accented Hindi begins with “Punjabis in the house” and explains his first international flight to London. He also mentions how his trip to Wagah Border had an ulterior motive and we think it’s fair enough.

Jaspreet Singh

Paaji’s acts get funny with every second. After watching this video of Jaspreet Singh on Horror Movies, you will not be able to look at those movies again, in the same way. It’s logical, it’s hilarious and as one of the comments on this YouTube video states, “this sardaar is actually asardaar” – we have no two thoughts about it.

Gaurav Kapoor’s act is always packed with relatable yet bizarre tidbits which are sure to leave you cracking with laughter. His puns are puntastic and his topics are fresh off the shelf. Gaurav Kapoor’s Rich People, Lifebuoy & His Nano, is the latest one from the pro of relatable comedy.

Herein, he talks about how he hates rich people for they received everything which he couldn’t. He makes a direct comparison with his life and his car, which isn’t just any car, his car is an emotion! Gaurav is especially jealous of his one rich friend who was gifted a Skoda Laura by his father after bumping his Honda City.

Gaurav also jokes about how Lifebuoy soap has created a certain image for itself. No matter how much the advertisements talk about this soap doing ‘Tandrusti ki Raksha’, but it will always remain the ‘handwash soap’.

Review: Gaurav Kapoor’s Hahakaar

Comedians narrating their sets in languages other than English have grown vastly, especially the ones from North India. In spite of being a sub-genre, audience can still be seen enthusiastically huddling for the shows. Hindi speaking comics do pose a challenge in presenting a distinctive voice, but it is comedians like Gaurav Kapoor who make their shows an enjoyable ride! Gaurav Kapoor’s Hahakaar is a story about a middle class North Indian man’s way of dealing with ordeals.

HahaKaar has Gaurav’s personal narratives woven finely in the threads of relatability. This keen observation and delivery left us cracking.

Here are the bits that we enjoyed:

To start off, Gaurav talks about the venue, the full house, admiring himself. Stating that a small setting allows him to write ‘Sold Out’ anytime on Facebook.

He smoothly moves on to a bit about housing in Mumbai, mentioning about the two misused words in English Language – ‘Just’ & ‘Only’.

He further went on to educate us on the correct usage of the word ‘ONLY’.

Transitioning to office setups, he raises a valid point that ‘HRs are obsessed with Fridays, aka, Fun Fridays’.

What we loved was his bit about his job at a call center. Packed with jokes about his conversation with a caller in English, and how he explained him the concept of spending and over-spending with a special mention of bedsheets. Also, he told us that language barriers can be ended with wee bit altercations with managers.

Talking about travelling, it’s impossible not to mention Goa. He describes the wannabe tourists of Goa very well.

The way he decided to payback whatever his family did for him, by feeding Crocin to his father and getting cataract surgery done for his mother, both were uncalled for.

To sum up, a comparatively shorter run-time of the show loaded with some funny anecdotes and jokes made it an interesting watch. The high density of punchlines, and the impeccable delivery did delight the audience.
