The post Comedian Rajmohan on his experience as a Comicstaan Semma Comedy Pa judge appeared first on Humour Sapiens.
]]>This Tamil spinoff of the popular show Comicstaan will mark Amazon Prime Video’s entry into Tamil stand-up comedy. To pique local interest, the show will feature three top Tamil-speaking comedians who will mentor and judge the participants over eight episodes to find the best in the Tamil stand-up scene.
Comic and Youtuber Rajmohan, who is known for actively talking about socially relevant issues, has also featured in various videos of ‘Put Chutney’, Chennai’s most popular online brand. Besides displaying his humour A-game, the actor continues to pack a punch in big budget movies and enjoy an ever-growing fandom on social media.
The entire experience of shooting this show was wonderful. I learned a new thing in every single episode and from every person throughout the series.
There are lessons that I learnt from everyone in every single episode. I used to watch them, observe how comedy from paper translates onto stage through them. This kind of a transition is a lesson not only for me but for every comic out there. I am sure this program has the potential to create comedians who will go out and make their mark on the stand-up circuit.
I got to learn something new in each episode and from every person throughout the series
Everybody thinks differently. For example, Karthik is completely different and someone who really can’t really offend anyone. He is generally a very strict person but his persona changes as soon as he enters the stage. On stage, he is comparatively cooler and more relaxed.
Syama spoke on unconventional topics that no one will usually choose. That’s what impressed me the most about her, her uniqueness to try out something new.
Even the way Annamalai thinks, it is completely diverse. I may say Annamalai has a unique way of reaching an audience with a more conventional thought-process. He is a very urban guy, very educated, but at the same time, his approach is very beautifully traditional.

Amazon Funnies (Amazon Prime Video)
What better than having 14 stand-up comics working together to entertain you and spread some laughter? Amazon added a cherry on top of the cake of festivities with Amazon Funnies – Prime Day Special. It featured a stellar line-up of 14 comedians – Sumit Sourav, Karthik Kumar, Aishwarya Mohanraj, Shreeja Chaturvedi, Nishant Tanwar, Neeti Palta, Sapan Verma, Sumukhi Suresh, Gaurav Kapoor, Urooj Ashfaq, Rahul Subramanian, Nishant Suri, Rahul Dua, and Anubhav Singh Bassi – who performed a 10-minute set every hour. They covered everything from movies to breakups, to gymming and wedding. If you haven’t watched it yet, you are missing the miniature doses of happiness.
Vir Das for India (Netflix)
After the release of two comedy specials on Netflix – Losing It and Abroad Understanding, Vir Das came up with another special ‘Vir Das for India’ early this year. The special talks about his life spent growing up in India, mentioning India’s favourite Parle G, Old Monk and chyawanprash. What’s amazing about this man is, he finds the funny side about everyday things that make us truly Indian. This special is truly special. Why? Because it is filled with some hearty laughs and nostalgia.
Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill (Netflix)
This show is all about Kanan Gill revisiting his 15-year-old self by the means of a letter that he wrote to himself – the older-Kanan, when he was 15. He goes through the letter which included a list of goals; he evaluates his achievement count and how far he has come in life. The tone Kanan maintains throughout is certainly a poignant one, but his subtle and witty comments rolled into one leaves everyone rolling with laughter.
Comicstaan (Amazon Prime Video)
Comicstaan, both Season 1 and 2 are the reality shows that feature aspiring comics – most of them are widely recognised now. So, Comicstaan showcases the talent of budding comedians who are groomed under the guidance of Kaneez Surka, Biswa Kalyan Rath, Kanan Gill, Kenny Sebastian, Abish Mathew, Sumukhi Suresh, Zakir Khan, Neeti Patla and Urooj Ashfaq. Their comic timing and extra-ordinary sets will leave you splits. What’s more? You also get to these contestants rehearse for their shows, yes, the behind the scenes part, and how they structure a perfect laughter-inducing set.
Pushpavalli (Amazon Prime Video)
Are you looking for a comedy show and not really a stand-up special? Then Pushpavalli, both Season 1 and 2 are your go-to options. Starring Sumukhi Suresh, Pushapavalli is the story of a girl who is obsessed with a boy she has never dated. The show is laced with witty one-liners and relatable situations which will plaster a smile on your face. Sumukhi’s impeccable comic timing steals the show and she delivers a performance to remember. If you haven’t watched it yet, this show could offer you some light-hearted laughter.

]]>The post Navin Kumar’s stand-up: South Indian vs Hindi appeared first on Humour Sapiens.
]]>He has been featured in The Hindu as well as The New Indian Express, and has performed in Chennai, Bangalore and Coimbatore, Navin has also performed alongside some of the top comics in the country including Sanjay Manaktala, Praveen Kumar, Aravind SA, Karthik Kumar, Sundeep Rao, Kartik Iyer and Kenny Sebastian. He has come up with his new video South Indian vs Hindi.
He starts off his video by quoting the comments from a feminist and an egalitarian on a standup comedy video, wherein the feminist male advised the comic to be a little more responsible and not use the cuss words, and an egalitarian female shuts him up. A great start to a great video.
He even talks about the invention of ‘Zero’ and the misuse of ‘Shoonya’. Navin also shares his agony that whenever he tries to talk in Hindi, his colleagues don’t act considerate and use simpler Hindi replies

]]>This guy is a class apart. His jokes are not only believable, but his whole demeanour is so likeable. Every time, he is up on the stage, the hooting and the laughing from the audience never stops. Be it his act on long distance relationships or the one on dressing sense of Indians – he tells it like it is. His best act so far has to be the one where he decodes the song ‘Lungi Dance’ from a South Indian’s perspective, more so from a Tamilian’s perspective and trust us when we say that you might actually fall of your chair laughing while watching this one.
“People from North India, my name is Karthik Kumar, with an H in the middle”. That’s right people. This lad from Chennai is breaking all myths people ever had of South India, through his numerous acts. If the stand-up comedy scene in South India is prominent now, it is because of him. He started Evam way back in 2003, with his friend Sunil Vishnu, which was mainly into theatre. They forayed into stand-up in 2010, when it was unheard of down South. Since then, there has been no looking back and people down South have no qualms of laughing at themselves anymore. His first stand-up Poke Me, is one of his best.
Yet another Kumar and this one is as hilarious as the other one. His style of comedy is rather different though, where his jokes come in the way of a casual conversation and that one sentence or word sticks with you. His act on Education and Raising kids does just that; where he asks the crowd “How many educated people here?” and then he goes on to say, “I was just checking if there were any Delhi people in the crowd!” …LOL! Watch his hilarious take on the subject here.
He is a Christian and a stand-up comedian; when he combines both into his acts, it is nothing but a laughter riot. Alex, as he is called, is easy to connect to as his acts brings characters to life, whom we would have also met and interacted with, at some point in our lives. A proof to this is the act on ‘Mamas, Minorities and Music’; his mimicry of a Mama (South Indian uncle) hits the right spot and you can see how the audience bursts out in laughter, including the other mamas present there!
“I was born in Bangalore and raised in traffic” – that’s how this doctor-cum- stand up introduces himself in every act. Every time he does so, he gets a roaring laughter from the audience. He has put laughter therapy to the best use possible. He uses a mix of Hindi, Kannada and English in most of his acts and that is why people from anywhere can relate to his performance. Here is one act where he talks about Bangalore traffic and road rage – simply amusing!
