One of its kind medical humour, ‘Starting Troubles’ is a web-series written and conceptualized by stand-up comedian, author, full-time ENT surgeon and innovator, Jagdish Chaturvedi. He has successfully done over 200 shows in India and abroad, and has over a hundred thousand YouTube subscribers in his kitty. Jagdish Chaturvedi‘s Starting Troubles intends to destroy this myth that being successful calls for focusing your attention and energy on carrying out only one thing in life. He feels that this mindset has become a barrier for many in achieving their dreams while they work around their day jobs.

Jagdish’s jokes as well as this web series are inspired by real life incidences and are something that all of us can connect with.

The thought behind Starting Troubles

The fact that such wide audience relates to his trainload of jokes and anecdotes is what motivated him to create a web series that rounds up his journey of transitions into this multifaceted life. Herein, Jagdish makes an attempt to depict his journey through overlaps, how he juggled roles, amid not-so-well-though decisions leaving him perplexed.

Given that this fun ride would have been tough to portray as multi-dimensional events during a comedy act, he decided to bring this to his viewers in a comedy web series format.

Thank God for this! And of course, Thank Jagdish for this!

Key message of Starting Troubles

Guised as humour and confusion, Starting Troubles means to convey a strong message of being persistent in pursuing whatever you want to do. There sure would be a few Starting Troubles, but the dust will settle down soon and you will come out a winner.

The pilot episode was self-funded by Jagdish. After its release on YouTube, it was very well received.
In case you haven’t seen it, watch it here:

The team of Starting Troubles

It cannot be denied that the team behind Starting Troubles is a perfect amalgamation of experience, talent, professionalism, and fun! The shoot went on for 9 long days, and the conceptualisation efforts of many more days came to fruition.

The team completed the phenomenal task of producing 120+ minutes of content with their commitment and hard work.

His team includes some of the renowned names of the acting fraternity. The core acting team comprises Parikshit Sahni, Renuka Shahane, Kurush Deboo, Rajesh PI, Jui Pawar, Bharat Chawla, Anushka Nair.

It is normal for an individual to tag medicine as a dry, exceedingly intellectual profession, the kind that is practiced by nerds in white lab coats. And then you look at Jagdish Chaturvedi, Bangalore-based ENT surgeon who rocks the stage as a stand-up comedian, and invents medical devices that could help millions with solutions to otherwise intractable problems. Jagdish sees medicine as an endlessly creative profession, and calls himself “the first ENTrepreneur.”

The First ENTrepreneur

Jagdish Chaturvedi’s life saving devices aren’t any laughing matter. He has conceptualized and co-invented 18 devices, out of which five medical devices were licensed in the ENT, pulmonology, medicine and hepatobiliary spaces. Wow! But that’s not it. These devices apparently have reduced the treatment costs by over 50% and drastically lowered the maintenance required.

Laughing Matter

For him, practicing medicine and practicing comedy go hand-in-hand. He also performs as an actor on the small stage. He has recently come up with the pilot episode of his web series ‘Starting Troubles’, the story of which is mostly inspired from true events, it has been exaggerated and dramatised for improving the story line.

Check it out!

Humour is a Secret Weapon

Not that he believes in the notion that laughter is the best medicine, he does comedy because he sees humor as a secret weapon which can sharpen his creativity and improvisation skills. He got into stand-up comedy about four years ago when his tight schedule no longer allowed him to commit to month-long theatre rehearsals. Stand-up comedy allows him a flexible format, and offers space to write or practice whenever he has time.

Lol-worthy Acts!

When he aptly pinpoints the Bangalore traffic problem saying, “I was born in Bangalore, raised in traffic. My entire life has pretty much been a standstill.”

He as well brings out the doctor inside him on the stage while explaining the traffic issues. He says people diagnose others on the road, saying, “Abbey andha hai kya, dikhta nahi hai?” (Are you blind, can you not see?)

He often debates about ‘men-are-from-Mars, women-are-from-Venus’. Why? He feels most things women say in relationships are ‘confusing’. For example, they often end an argument with, ‘Do whatever you want,’ and it confuses him, he says, because that’s the whole reason for the argument, the things I wanted to do.

Chaturvedi explicitly states that a sign that shows any relationship is going downhill is when a woman asks, “How could you do this to me?”. He adds, there is no possible answer to this question.

In his Youtube series ‘The Magaa of Small Things’, he shows just that!

One day he waited for his wife to make a mistake, and showed the audacity to ask her the same question, “How could you do this to me?”, to which she replied, “How could you say this to me?”

Benefits of Being a Doctor-Comic!

Jagdish Chaturvedi believes that there are several benefits to doing stand-up, as talking to a room full of strangers, making them laugh, has made him more approachable and likable as a doctor.

He has also excelled the art of when and how to keep interactions with patients cheery.

The magical ingredient of comedy has taught him how to use a customised approach and figure out the most effective way to cure his patients.

South India is not just the land of Carnatic Music and Rajnikant (like most North Indian perceive); it is also the land of awesome comedy, with of course, a touch of South Indian-ness to it! From the music culture to the Mylapore mamis, from Bangalore Traffic to even politics, there is nothing ‘conservative’ about these comedians down South.

Aravind SA

This guy is a class apart. His jokes are not only believable, but his whole demeanour is so likeable. Every time, he is up on the stage, the hooting and the laughing from the audience never stops. Be it his act on long distance relationships or the one on dressing sense of Indians – he tells it like it is. His best act so far has to be the one where he decodes the song ‘Lungi Dance’ from a South Indian’s perspective, more so from a Tamilian’s perspective and trust us when we say that you might actually fall of your chair laughing while watching this one.

Karthik Kumar

“People from North India, my name is Karthik Kumar, with an H in the middle”. That’s right people. This lad from Chennai is breaking all myths people ever had of South India, through his numerous acts. If the stand-up comedy scene in South India is prominent now, it is because of him. He started Evam way back in 2003, with his friend Sunil Vishnu, which was mainly into theatre. They forayed into stand-up in 2010, when it was unheard of down South. Since then, there has been no looking back and people down South have no qualms of laughing at themselves anymore. His first stand-up Poke Me, is one of his best.

Praveen Kumar

Yet another Kumar and this one is as hilarious as the other one. His style of comedy is rather different though, where his jokes come in the way of a casual conversation and that one sentence or word sticks with you. His act on Education and Raising kids does just that; where he asks the crowd “How many educated people here?” and then he goes on to say, “I was just checking if there were any Delhi people in the crowd!” …LOL! Watch his hilarious take on the subject here.

Alexander Babu

He is a Christian and a stand-up comedian; when he combines both into his acts, it is nothing but a laughter riot. Alex, as he is called, is easy to connect to as his acts brings characters to life, whom we would have also met and interacted with, at some point in our lives. A proof to this is the act on ‘Mamas, Minorities and Music’; his mimicry of a Mama (South Indian uncle) hits the right spot and you can see how the audience bursts out in laughter, including the other mamas present there!

Jagdish Chaturvedi

“I was born in Bangalore and raised in traffic” – that’s how this doctor-cum- stand up introduces himself in every act. Every time he does so, he gets a roaring laughter from the audience. He has put laughter therapy to the best use possible. He uses a mix of Hindi, Kannada and English in most of his acts and that is why people from anywhere can relate to his performance. Here is one act where he talks about Bangalore traffic and road rage – simply amusing!
